With spring's arrival, pop-up terraces are making a vibrant comeback in the streets of the capital. From April 1st through October 31st, 2026, cafés, bars, and restaurants will be able to set up these seasonal outdoor spaces, provided they adhere to strict regulations.

Launched in 2020, the pop-up terraces quickly reshaped the Parisian cityscape, transforming sidewalks and parking spots into lively outdoor dining spots. Celebrated for their friendly atmosphere, they have now been made permanent under certain conditions, with the City of Paris regulating their use through a strict set of guidelines.

Now only permitted from April to October, they have been made pay-to-access in order to better manage their numbers and reduce disruptions, while still adding vibrancy to the streets and boosting the local economy. After a few years' hiatus, they’re set to return this April. Here’s everything you need to know.

Ephemeral terraces return to Paris in April

With spring on the horizon, pop-up terraces are making a triumphant comeback in the city. From April 1st to October 31st, 2026, Parisians will once again be able to enjoy these lively outdoor spaces. Bars, restaurants, and other venues will be permitted to set up their terraces, provided they adhere to specific rules, including a mandatory closing time at 10 p.m. to ensure the neighborhood’s peace and quiet.

Where and how to install an ephemeral terrace?

To open a summer terrace, shopkeepers must obtain authorization from Paris City Hall. Once approved, they can be installed on sidewalks, parking spaces, squares, medians and temporary pedestrianized streets. But there are precise rules governing these arrangements.

On the sidewalk: extension is authorized in front of the business and, under certain conditions, in front of neighboring buildings. On a parking space: decking and lateral protection are compulsory, but it is forbidden to occupy reserved spaces (delivery, PRM, cabs, bicycles, etc.).

What equipment is authorized?

To harmonize the public space, only tables, chairs and parasols are allowed, with a maximum height of 1.30 meters. Vegetation is encouraged, but without totally obstructing the view.

Thefollowing are prohibited: roofs, tarpaulins, barnums, pallet wood, as well as any audio, heating or air-conditioning equipment. Outside opening hours, furniture must be stored inside the establishment or secured along the façade.

What are the penalties for non-compliance?

As every year, checks will be carried out by the town hall and the municipal police. Offenders risk fines ranging from 68 to 135 euros for nuisance or lack of maintenance. More serious offences can result in fines of up to 500 euros and forced dismantling. Repeated offences can lead to administrative closure and withdrawal of the authorization for three years.

Who can benefit?

Terraces aren’t just for bars and restaurants. Now, booksellers, record shops, florists, and hotels can also apply for a permit. Once approved, the authorization is typically renewed annually by default, provided that the rules are followed.
