With warmer weather, the desire to fire up the grill returns for many Parisians. But is it really possible to have a barbecue in Paris—on your balcony or in a park? Let’s take a look at the realities.

Is it possible to have a barbecue in Paris on your terrace or balcony, in a park, or on the public way? As the weather warms up, this question comes up repeatedly among Parisians. In practice, the answer is straightforward: barbecues are strictly prohibited in the city’s parks, woods, and gardens, as well as along the public roads and the banks of the Seine.

For individuals, it is therefore not possible to spontaneously set up a barbecue in a public square, on a lawn, or in a municipal park. The City of Paris officially prohibits the use of barbecues in its parks and gardens. In other words, unlike some other French cities, the capital does not offer public spaces where you can freely cook food over charcoal or open flame.

In a private space, there’s no overarching ban, but several rules can come into play depending on the building, lease agreements, and potential nuisances. So, when it comes to a balcony, a terrace, or a private garden, the situation becomes a bit more complex. There’s no law outright banning barbecuing at home, but that doesn’t mean everything goes.

The first instinct is to check the co-ownership rules if you live in an apartment building, or your lease agreement if you're renting. Some documents explicitly ban barbecues, especially charcoal ones, due to fire hazards, smoke, or odors. Even without a formal ban, grilling can easily lead to disputes with neighbors.

In Paris, it's important to remember that specific situations, such as pollution episodes, can lead to additional restrictions. Regardless of the circumstances, exercising caution is essential—for both safety and neighborly relations.

And what about the Île-de-France? Is it possible to have a barbecue in the Paris region? The general rule tends to be similar, but it can vary depending on the municipalities and the management of green spaces. In many parks across Île-de-France, barbecues, planchas, and open fires are also prohibited.

However, there are certain places in Île-de-France, such as some recreation centers, where barbecues are allowed. Take a look at our guide below to find a spot where you can grill your sausages legally!
