Famous Broadway musical “Funny Girl” is finally coming to Paris, 55 years after its creation!
It will be performed at Théâtre Marigny for 60 exceptional shows from November 7, 2019 to January 5, 2020.
“Funny Girl” was first created on stage in 1964 before becoming a movie in 1969 starring Barbara Streisand as the lead role. She even won the Oscar for best actress and the Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or a comedy for her performance.
“Funny Girl” is the fictionalized biography of American actress Fanny Brice born in 1891 and dead in 1951. Fanny Brice performed in Broadway on “Ziegfeld Follies” by Florenz Ziegfeld thanks to whom she became a star.
“Funny Girl” starts in New York in the 1910’s. Fanny Brice waits for her husband Nick to come out of prison and she remembers the stages of her career, from the ungrateful teenager she was to the famous star she became. As a teen, she didn’t look well but she dreamt of going on stage. After rough debuts, she finally makes a breakthrough as a comic singer and meets Nick Arnstein. They got married. When Fanny becomes a star thanks to Florenz Ziegfeld, Nick’s business collapses and he’s arrested.
The show will be performed in English with French subtitles and feature a new production by Stephen Mear who also staged “42nd Street” and choreographed “Singin’ in the Rain” at Théâtre du Châtelet and more recently “Guys and Dolls” at Marigny.
