It's the event synonymous with cultural highlights not to be missed in September. Every year, the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) offer a wide range of free visits, unusual experiences and exceptional openings to the fascinating treasures that surround us.
In Paris and the Paris region, a rich program of events awaits us, taking us behind the scenes to discover the nuggets at the heart of museums, monuments, châteaux, major institutions, ministries, embassies and much more. This event that unites all passions awaits us this weekend of September 20 and 21, 2025, for a promising 42nd edition!
In the Yvelines department, the town of Rambouillet and its fabulous heritage will of course be taking part! And among the treasures highlighted for the Journées du Patrimoine 2025 is the Palais du Roi de Rome and its garden. This residence, destined to become the home of Napoleon I 's son, was built using the plans of theHôtel du Gouvernement de Rambouillet, erected by order of Louis XVI between 1784 and 1785, which once stood here. Today, the site houses a museum and garden, which are now open to the public.
VILLE D'ART ET D'HISTOIRE AREA
The museum's reception/ticket area is dedicated to the history and heritage of Rambouillet, with an "information point" and a model of the monument in its original state. You'll also find a store selling Heritage Department publications and a selection of postcards. A baby carrier is available for young parents.
PAINTINGS, SCULPTURES AND OBJETS D'ART
Three centuries of Rambolitan history
A dozen works - paintings, sculptures and objets d'art - evoke three centuries of Rambolitan history: the estate and its owners, the forest, agriculture, hunting... The museum will now be open continuously, and most of the municipal collections will be presented on a permanent basis in a scenography designed to make the monument more legible. A games cabinet will present, on a rotating basis - twice a year - the collection of Goose games and other board games, comprising some 2,400 pieces.
GAME CABINET
Twenty thousand places on the oceans
Embark on a voyage of discovery across the seas and oceans. In the 18th century, a number of naval games were published, providing a fun way to discover the art of sailing. Great adventure novels, such as Around the World in 80 Days, were adapted into games: the player travels between land and sea to discover new countries, using boxes and planispheres. A new presentation rich in detail, color and travel!
Built from 1807, this private mansion was soon assigned to the King of Rome, son of Napoleon I and Marie-Louise of Austria. In the 1830s, it was divided between several owners and lost its central part. Today, the Pavillon du Verger stands in the garden adjoining the now public part. This recently restored garden pavilion dates from the early 1770s.
During the last weekend of the exhibition, take a guided tour of the exhibition. Treat yourself to a journey through the landscape paintings, fields, forests and small villages that shape the Chevreuse Valley.
A literary and poetic journey led by Sophie Loizeau, Grand Prix de poésie 2025 de la Société des Gens de Lettres. Lively reading sessions to explore the sensitive and cultural landscapes that mark the identity of these places. Come and read and share the texts you love.
In partnership with the Parc naturel régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse.
