Since the beginning of the week, public transportation across Île-de-France has been suffering disruptions due to snow and ice. The situation is expected to worsen again Thursday evening and Friday morning, with the arrival of Storm Goretti. In the region, wind gusts could reach up to 95 km/h overnight Thursday into Friday. After snow and ice, it's time for strong winds! Storm Goretti is set to sweep across northern and western France, with gusts reaching "sustained speeds of 90 to 95 km/h over large areas, and locally hitting 100 km/h" in Île-de-France. According to the meteorological service, the onset of this windy spell is expected Thursday evening and is likely to intensify as the night progresses, from Thursday into Friday. These strong winds could lead to falling branches or trees weakened by the storm, potentially causing disruptions to public transportation, particularly affecting several tram, RER, and Transilien lines.
The Cable C1, the first urban cable car line in Île-de-France, could also be affected. Its operation is governed by strict safety regulations during adverse weather conditions. According to its official website, cabin speeds are reduced when strong winds blow, specifically beginning at 70 km/h. Below this threshold, the cable car runs normally. However, during storms, when wind speeds exceed 90 km/h, the service is temporarily suspended, and “alternative bus services will automatically be put in place” to ensure passengers can travel without disruption.
With winds expected to reach up to 90 km/h this Thursday evening in the Val-de-Marne, disruptions and interruptions are likely to affect the C1 Cable service. Fortunately, the strongest gusts are forecast for the night from Thursday to Friday, when the cable car is typically closed. By the morning of January 9, winds could still hit 75 km/h in the Val-de-Marne. As a result, the Île-de-France cable car service might again face disruptions on the morning of January 9.
