The Butte-aux-Cailles swimming pool, located on Place Verlaine in Paris, is a historic site that has retained its 1920s charm. Listed as a historic monument, it is an architectural gem in the Neo-Romanesque style designed byarchitect Louis Bonnier. Its architecture contrasts with the modernist designs of the time. Let us take you on a tour of this swimming spot nestled in a village-like neighborhood in the heart of the 13th arrondissement.
In terms of facilities, the Butte-aux-Cailles swimming pool has three different pools: an indoor pool, a Nordic pool (the first of its kind in Paris, allowing you to swim outdoors all year round in water heated to 28°C) and a 6-meter-long children's pool. The indoor pool and Nordic pool both have a depth ranging from 0.80 to 2.70 meters and a width of 12 meters for the former and 12.5 meters for the latter. For those who enjoy sunbathing on sunny days, there is also a solarium where you can bask in the sun!
In fact, the history of the Buttes-aux-Cailles swimming pool goes back a long way! Yes, it is one of the oldest swimming pools in the capital still in operation. It was built on the site of the old Butte aux Cailles mill, which in the 19th century supplied water to the neighborhood through artesian wells. In 1946, a new hot water source was discovered under the pool during renovation work. This source, which flows at a temperature of 28°C, provides natural heating for the pools, making the Buttes-aux-Cailles pool one of the few in Paris to offer this feature.
