Attention comic book lovers and enthusiasts! This spring, the Daniel Maghen gallery in Paris is devoting a fine retrospective to Grzegorz Rosinski. For those less familiar with the artist, Grzegorz Rosinski is a major figure in European comics, considered by many to be one of the masters of the genre. He is best known as the talented illustrator and co-creator of the legendary"Thorgal" series, alongside Belgian novelist and screenwriter Jean Van Hamme.
From April 23 to May 24, 2025, the Daniel Maghen gallery in Paris will be honoring Grzegorz Rosinski 's impressive work with a brand-new, free exhibition. Entitled " ROSINSKI / THORGAL [1977 - 2022] " , this retrospective retraces more than 40 years of the Polish cartoonist's career, highlighting key series and albums. Some 300 major works, " hitherto preserved by the artist's family ", will be on view for the occasion, including around 100 hanging on the walls. For the rest, the Parisian gallery provides visitors with"books" to leaf through, including drawings by Grzegorz Rosinski dating from 2022.
For around two months, visitors will be able to admire 150 original plates from all the legendary"Thorgal" albums (Le Lombard), " including rare pages from the first two volumes: "La Magicienne Trahie" (1977) and "L'Île des Mers Gelées" (1978) ", says the Paris gallery in a press release.
It's an opportunity to delve back into the past, and into such must-have albums as"Louve","La Chute de Brek Zarith","Les Archers" and"Les Trois Vieillards du pays d'Aran". The"Thorgal" series, which began in 1977 in Le Journal de Tintin, has sold over 16 million copies to date! The comic has also been translated into some twenty languages.
Other sagas drawn by Grzegorz Rosinski are also featured, including"Le Grand Pouvoir du Chninkel" (Casterman),"Complaintes des landes perdues" (Dargaud),"La Vengeance du Comte Skarbek" (Dargaud) and"Western"(Le Lombard).
This retrospective devoted to Grzegorz Rosinski is also an opportunity to discover some of the artist's last (and sublime) large-format paintings, produced between 2000 and 2020. This unique retrospective should appeal to lovers of Grzegorz Rosinski's work, fans of "Thorgal" and collectors, of course, but also to the curious who wish to learn more about the famous Polish artist and his creative process.
As indicated by Daniel Maghen Gallery, which has supported and accompanied the Polish artist for 30 years now, this exhibition will give rise to a sale. A first auction was held at Christie's in 2017. The very first exhibition-sale was held in 2020.
