In Montreuil (93), the Horticultural Museum housed in the Jardin-École invites visitors to delve into the remarkable history of Montreuil’s famous orchards, once renowned even at royal tables. A quirky, charming visit to discover on the second Sunday of every month.

Just a few metro stops from Paris, in the heights of Montreuil, the famous Murs à Pêches tell the fascinating story of a unique horticultural know-how that once put the town on the map across Europe.

From the 17th century, the Montreuil arboriculturists had a revolutionary idea: to cultivate espalier peaches against long plastered walls to capture and return the sun’s heat. Thanks to this ingenious technique, the fruits ripened faster and developed exceptional quality. In the 19th century, nearly 300 hectares of walls covered Montreuil, giving rise to peaches so renowned that they were served on the royal and imperial tables!

Today, this heritage lives on thanks to enthusiasts who maintain gardens, orchards and historic plots. At the heart of this former horticultural landscape, the Montreuil Regional Horticultural Society opens the doors to the Horticultural Museum of the Peach Walls, housed in the charming Garden-School.

This little museum, unique in France, invites visitors into the world of Montreuil's horticulturists through antique tools, espalier cultivation techniques and rare objects. It reveals, in particular, the delicate art of 'marking' fruit, a practice that involved drawing patterns and inscriptions directly on the peach skins with sun-exposed stencils.

The visit goes beyond the museum’s collections. The enthusiasts who run the venue eagerly share the walls’ history, the secrets of the old varieties, and the preservation challenges of this botanical heritage. The museum welcomes the public freely and free of charge on the second Sunday of every month, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Guided tours are also offered on request, for a fee. The museum visit continues with an orchard tour and a tasting of orchard fruits, if the season allows!
