Lovers of Italian cuisine are always on the lookout for good addresses, and it could well be that the editors have found you a nugget in their field... Let's head for Orto, a restaurant specializing in panino, the real thing, the kind you'll find in any good sandwich shop in Italy ("Paninoteche" for connoisseurs). And at Orto, the product comes first!
It was the brainchild of two childhood friends, Antoine and Benjamin, whose Italian grandparents had immigrated to France at the same time and knew each other well. After school, the two friends would meet up at the nonna' s to enjoy a good panini! An image that has stayed with them, leading them to open their first establishment in Toulouse in 2019. Building on their success, a first restaurant opened in Paris in mid-November, and the two panini lovers have every intention of conquering the capital!
On the menu, panini made with products straight from Italy! The Firmino, with truffle mortadella, tartufata, potato parmiggiana, DOP buffala mozzarella and hazelnuts, and the Meta, with IGP speck, DOP basil pesto, eggplant parmiggiana, DOP buffala mozzarella, fresh basil and pistachios.
Charcuterie lovers won't be disappointed with the Stracci, a panino with salame milano, DOP basil pesto, marinated grilled zucchini, burrata stracciatella, fresh basil and hazelnuts, or the Calabrese with spianata piccante, basil pesto, marinated grilled peppers, mozzarella di buffala, N'Duja calabrese and hazelnuts.
You can also opt for the Veggi, a vegetarian panino, or the Buona Terra, with mortadella, grilled vegetable sauce, peppercorn pecorino and potato parmiggiana... We'll let you discover the rest of the menu! A menu we were able to try out... We were tempted by the Meta, a classic panini with speck (smoked and cured pork, less fatty than cured ham), pesto, hazelnuts, eggplant parmiggiana and mozzarella.
A particularly tasty sandwich, strangely light compared to the size and generosity of the panino, thanks in particular to its ultra-light ciabatta bread, produced locally by a neighborhood bakery and respectful of Antoine's grandmother's recipes. A panino that took us straight to Italy, thanks of course to the 100% Italian products making up the sandwich, just like over there. We even let ourselves be tempted by the extra arugula, which adds a little boost to the whole, with a little extra bitterness that blends perfectly with the balance of flavors in the sandwich.
In short, a wonderful discovery that we highly recommend, especially if you like traditional Italian cuisine. And you might even be tempted by a dessert (tiramisu, pana cotta, panino with nicocciolata...) if you still have a little room (we didn't, but we'll take our revenge!). Otherwise, panini are also available on delivery platforms... Shall we go and discover Orto, my friends?
Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
