We went on site to cover the fireworks at the Château de Versailles (78), one of the few shows that manageable to keep during this National Day 2026. In a department where the heatwave prefectural order has wiped out many events, the estate secured a prefectural exemption to host its Grandes Eaux Nocturnes. After all, the fountain is set on a water basin, which reduces certain risks. Watch the scenes among illuminated groves, drones, and a finale in the colors of the Republic.
Indeed, the show did go ahead. It’s important to note that organizers had to contend with constraints. For safety reasons linked to drought and heat, the pyrotechnics were scaled back and fired lower than usual. The aerial bursts were more restrained, missing the vertical reach that typically defines the grand Versailles displays.
The drone show, for its part, has lost none of its grandeur. The illuminated crafts traced their formations in the sky as planned, unfazed by the restrictions on explosives. It was, in fact, this segment that left the crowd gathered around Neptune Basin—the largest basin in the gardens—most impressed.
To mark the National Day, the show was extended by five minutes from the classic version of the Grandes Eaux Nocturnes. A succession of tableaux unfolded in a staging unmistakably patriotic: the cockade, the Marianne, the motto of the Republic (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity) and France itself, all set to the Marseillaise in the background.
Spectators loved the moment when the drones traced the silhouette of France in the sky, just before the Marseillaise rang out. A simple, effective moment that had its little effect on the crowd, despite the heat still hanging in the air at this hour of the evening.
Before the finale, the evening unfolded as it usually does. The stroll took visitors through the gardens designed by André Le Nôtre, where groves that are normally closed to the public become accessible at dusk. The fountains come alive, jets of water unfurling in a choreography set to a soundtrack that travels back in time with the great Baroque masterpieces, from Lully to Rameau.
For those who couldn't make it, the Grandes Eaux Nocturnes continue all summer on Saturday evenings through September 19, 2026, with online booking recommended on the Château de Versailles Spectacles site. To reach it, the RER C to Versailles Château Rive Gauche remains the simplest option.
