Every six years in France, municipal elections are held. These invite the inhabitants of each commune to vote for their future municipal councillors, and by extension, their next mayors. Generally speaking, voters choose between the various lists proposed and their programs, represented by a head of list, linked or not to one or more political parties.
In towns with more than 1,000 inhabitants, the list with the most votes wins half the seats on the municipal council. The remainder is distributed in proportion to the results between the lists that have obtained more than 50% of the votes. If a list wins an absolute majority (more than 50% of the votes) in the first round of voting, or if more than a quarter of registered voters turn out at the polls, the elections are closed in this first round. If this is not the case, a second round is organized, in which only those lists having obtained more than 10% of the votes in the first round may stand.
For towns and villages with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, the system is a two-round, multi-mandate majority system.
These elections determine the composition of the municipal council. The council then votes for the mayor and deputy mayors.
The next municipal elections are scheduled for March 2026. The government has unveiled the date on which these elections will be held: citizens are expected to go to the polls on March 15 and 22, 2026.
To vote, you must be registered on the electoral roll of your commune of residence. Check that you are on the electoral roll before February 3, 2026, after which it will be too late to register and take part in the election.
