An interprofessional strike is mobilizing Paris this Thursday, October 2, 2025, with a demonstration starting from Place d'Italie at 2pm and heading for Place Vauban. The union is opposed to the draft 2026 budget.

The strike on October 2, 2025 follows on from the September 18 mobilization, which drew between 500,000 and one million demonstrators nationwide. In the capital, this new day of action promises to cause major disruption to transport, schools and public services. The eight representative unions(CFDT, CGT, FO, CFE-CGC, CFTC, Unsa, FSU and Solidaires) are calling for the movement to be amplified following the failure of negotiations with Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu on September 24 at Matignon. "The Prime Minister gave no clear response to the expectations of working men and women," lamented Marylise Léon, General Secretary of the CFDT, as she left the meeting.

The meeting place for the Paris demonstration is Place d'Italie in the 13th arrondissement at 2pm. The procession will then cross the capital towards Place Vauban, in the 7th arrondissement, near Les Invalides. This route was confirmed on Monday September 29 by BFMTV. The inter-union meeting point will be at the corner of rue Lebrun and rue des Gobelins, for those wishing to join specific processions. The route will enable demonstrators to cross a significant part of the capital, from south-east to west, to make their demands heard by public authorities. Here are the details of the demonstration route:

  • Departure at 2pm from Place d'Italie (13th arrondissement)
  • Inter-union meeting point at the corner of rue Lebrun and rue des Gobelins
  • Crossing from south-east Paris to the west of the capital
  • Arrival at Place Vauban (7th arrondissement), near Les Invalides

Traffic controls will be in place around the event route. Motorists will have to anticipate disruptions and detour throughout the afternoon, particularly around Place d'Italie at the start and in the 7th arrondissement at the finish. Public transport is also likely to be severely disrupted, with metro stations potentially closed along the route of the procession for security reasons. Those who are able to do so are urged to telecommute or adapt their journeys accordingly to avoid traffic problems.

Beyond Paris, mobilizations are planned in several major French cities, including Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Nantes and Strasbourg. The CGT has provided an interactive map showing the location of rallies across the country. In the Paris region, the "Bloquons Tout" movement may also join the day of action, adding road blockades to rail disruptions and further complicating travel.

What are the unions' demands for this strike?

The unions are demanding that the draft 2026 budget be abandoned, as it provides for the doubling of medical deductibles, the de-indexation of pensions and social benefits, the elimination of 3,000 civil servant posts and the reform of unemployment insurance. Above all, theintersyndicale is calling for the repeal of the 2023 pension reform, which remains a major stumbling block between the unions and the government. The unions are also calling for tax justice, with the taxation of large estates and very high incomes, as well as the social and environmental conditionality of the 211 billion euros of public aid to private companies.

These demands affect the entire working world, from private-sector employees to civil servants, jobseekers, young people and pensioners. Faced with the absence of concrete answers during the meeting at Matignon, the unions quickly called for this new day of mobilization. The aim is to demonstrate to the government that social protest is not weakening, and that workers are ready to continue the movement until their demands are met. The CGT, CFDT, FO and other unions are counting on a strong turnout to have an impact on the forthcoming negotiations.

What can we expect in terms of disruption?

The four representative SNCF unions(CGT Cheminots, Unsa ferroviaire, Sud Rail and CFDT Cheminots) have joined forces to call for massive mobilization, raising the prospect of far greater disruption than during the previous mobilization. The four majority unions at RATP(CGT, Force Ouvrière, Unsa-Mobilité and CFE-CGC) are also taking part. Traffic forecasts will be available the evening before on SNCF Connect and on RATP applications. The cross-industry industrial action will disrupt traintraffic from 7pm on Wednesday October 1 to 8am on Friday October 3, with cancellations scheduled for the evening and morning.

In theFrench education system, many elementary school, collèges and lycées will see a significant proportion of their staff on strike. Families will be informed in advance of possible closures in elementary school, while in secondary schools, the movement could lead to partial or total class closures at the last minute. The intersyndicale hopes to mobilize more of the hospital sector, local administrations and local civil servants, thus broadening the scope of the mobilization beyond the traditionally striking sectors. The aim of this strategy is to demonstrate the scale of the protest and increase the pressure on the government. You will also find details of the RATP and SNCF disruptions scheduled for October 2, updated as announcements are made.

The mobilization on October 2 takes place in a tense social climate, as the government is due to present its draft budget by October 13. The unions intend to keep up the pressure to obtain concrete answers to their demands and make the voice of the working world heard in the face of the austerity measures announced. The day of September 18 had already shown the determination of the trade unions to continue mobilizing until their demands are heard. The next few days will be decisive in determining the social movement's ability to sustain itself over the long term and really influence government decisions.
