Some metros are getting on in years... and Île-de-France Mobilités is gradually replacing them with a new generation: the MF19. Deployed this Thursday, October 16, on line 10 after weeks of work, this model is due to replace the old ones by 2033 on all lines that have not been automated or modernized in recent years: 7bis, 3bis, 13, 12, 8, 3 and 7, i.e. 50% of Paris metro lines.
The MF67, MF77 and MF88 trains, soon to reach the end of their lives, have served users well, but it's time to make way for something new. Between 2025 and 2027, the first to benefit will be lines 7bis, 3bis and 13, followed by lines 12 and 8 between 2028 and 2029, and finally lines 3 and 7 between 2031 and 2033. It will take almost eight years to fully modernize Paris's lines, with a great deal of work ahead to prepare the platforms for the new rolling stock.
As for line 10, a gradual roll-out is planned, with only the first train making its appearance on Thursday, as was the case on line 6, where users have long seen the old trains in the middle of the new ones. It will be summer 2027 before all 30 trains are replaced. Moreover, line 13 is due to be automated by 2035, and the arrival of the MF19 in 2027 is intended to be the first step.
Comprising 4 to 5 cars, the MF19 features a "boa" design, allowing passengers to move from one end of the train to the other. Its interior is modular to adapt to the needs of different lines and their ridership, with fewer seats than before - 146 on lines 3, 10 and 12 and 122 on lines 7, 8 and 13 - leaving more standing room during rush hour. There's refrigerated ventilation, video protection and on-board USB sockets, as well as real-time passenger information screens.
