The Cannes press conference, held on Thursday April 10, revealed much of the official selection: films competing for the Palme d'Or, films inUn Certain Regard and films in the parallel sections, including works presented at Cannes Première.
Such is the case with Fatih Akin'sAmrum, which returns to the Croisette almost 20 years after winning the Screenplay Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival for his film De l'autre côté. Also winner of a Golden Bear (for Head-On) and a Grand Prix at the Venice Film Festival (for Soul Kitchen), the German director is back with a feature film starring Jasper Billerbeck, Diane Kruger and Laura Tonke.
"It wasn't originally Fatih Akin's project, but that of his film teacher, who was supposed to make the film but was too old to be able to direct it. So he asked his former student to do it," explained Thierry Frémaux at the press conference.
Amrum will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. The official release date in French cinemas has not yet been announced.
Synopsis : On the island of Amrum in the spring of 1945. Seal hunting, midnight fishing, working the fields—nothing is too risky or tough for 12-year-old Nanning, who compassionately helps his mother provide for their family during the closing days of World War II.
