This year, the Château de Versailles celebrates 150 years of the French Republic, and has already opened new rooms to the public, including the Congress Hall and the apartment of the President of the Congress. From April 5, 2025, General de Gaulle's apartments will get the chance to do just that, refurbished by the politician in the 1960s as a private presidential residence in the little-known Trianon-sous-Bois wing.
You have to go around the high garden parterre to reach this discreet wing of the Grand Trianon, built to house Louis XIV's family. This is the only wing of the palace with an upper storey, built in limestone but without marble veneer, where the first floor now houses various offices, including that of the General and his aides-de-camp, salons and a dining room. Upstairs, a series of bedrooms and bathrooms are waiting to be rediscovered by the general public.
In the basement, 800 m2 of ultra-modern kitchens serve the many guests at official banquets held in the Cotelle gallery, like a little Elysée in the country. The furniture in Trianon-sous-Bois was restored by the Mobilier national in 2015, so the wing can be seen today in its 1960s state. General de Gaulle was the last head of state to leave his mark on the Grand Trianon.
The Trianon-sous-Bois wing will be open to the public every weekend from April 5, 2025.
