The club sandwich originated in private clubs in New York at the end of the 19th century, hence its name. Quickly adopted by hotels and cafés around the world, it became a standard for room service, lunch on the go and quality snacking.
Its strength lies in its well-thought-out simplicity: three slices of toasted sandwich bread, two layers of topping and a neat cut into triangles held together by wooden picks. The classic version contains roast chicken (or sometimes turkey), crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and sometimes a sliced hard-boiled egg. But it can also be made in any number of ways!
Some replace the chicken with smoked salmon and pastrami, while others add melted cheese, a fried egg or avocado. As for the bread, it can be wholemeal, seeded, brioche or even crustless. In all cases, this is a hearty but well-balanced sandwich , with something soft, crunchy, salty and fresh.
In Paris, the club sandwich is a fixture in hotels, brasseries, contemporary cafés and even street-food outlets. Eaten with your fingers, with fries or a salad, for lunch or as a savory snack, it continues to appeal for its practicality and simple elegance. Here are the best places to eat them in Paris!
