This is definitely not a happy time for lovers of museums in Paris and the Île-de-France region. After the Centre Pompidou, the Nissim de Camondo Museum, and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, it is now the turn of the French Playing Card Museum to close its doors for various works.
Located in Issy-les-Moulineaux, in the Hauts-de-Seine department, this museum is dedicated (as its name suggests) to playing cards. It houses more than 11,000 sets from around the world. Visitors can discover card games from India, China, and Japan, cards dating from the Ancien Régime to the present day, fantasy and artistic cards, and more.
In 2026, the museum plans to close its doors to the public. For the moment, the plan is to close the Musée de la Carte à Jouer in mid-July 2026 for a period of approximately one year. During this time, the institution will undergo interior renovations to modify and modernize the public reception areas and permanent collection spaces.
According to information provided by the Hauts-de-Seine department, no exterior work, major renovations, or expansions are planned that would alter the building. The planned work will therefore only affect the interior of the museum and is expected to last from summer 2026 to summer 2027.
Before the museum closes, a unique exhibition is planned, focusing on Jean Dubuffet and his Tour aux Figures. On display from December 3, 2025, until summer 2026.
