After showcasing numerous exhibitions on Italian and French art, the Jacquemart-André Museum is now turning its focus to Hispanic art. Specifically, it’s illuminating the baroque era of the Spanish Golden Age and its colonies.
From March 26 to August 2, 2026, the Jacquemart-André Museum will host the exhibition Splendors of the Baroque. This curated journey features a selection of masterpieces borrowed from the collections of the Hispanic Society of America in New York, the exhibition's partner. This American museum is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the arts and cultures of over 35 countries across the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world.
For the Jacquemart-André Museum's latest exhibition, the Hispanic Society of America has lent a carefully curated selection of 17th-century paintings. Visitors are thus treated to a stunning collection of around forty masterworks from the Golden Age of Spain’s Habsburg monarchy—an era marked by booming economic, artistic, and cultural achievements. Among the featured works are renowned paintings by El Greco, Velázquez, and Zurbarán.
During this Golden Age, Spain shines brightly on the world stage. The kingdom has established colonies across much of South America and the Philippines, while the generous patronage of the Habsburg family fuels a flourishing artistic scene that influences European culture. Spain is wealthy and powerful, standing as one of Europe's leading lights in art and culture.
This period marked the emergence of Baroque in Spain: an intense, highly expressive, and fervently passionate style, deeply influenced by religion and spirituality. The exhibition highlights these central themes, aiming to celebrate and elevate the era’s religious doctrines and spiritual currents. Visitors will also find plenty of portraits, with Velázquez unquestionably reigning as the master of the genre.
This vibrant Spanish art scene draws inspiration from Italian and Flemish masters, while also being shaped by the discoveries of the New World. Spain attracts numerous artists eager to tap into this renewed wave of creative energy.
The exhibition at the Jacquemart-André Museum also features works created by renowned artists from the 17th and 18th centuries, hailing from Latin America. The exhibit creates a dialogue between these artists separated by an ocean but united through a shared cultural tradition established by colonizers.
The Parisian museum promises us a magnificent journey, exploring extraordinary works of art.
