What if we take a little height to glimpse a different side of Paris? At the Porte de Versailles, Porte de Versailles, Nature Urbaine, also known as NU Paris, invites you to climb onto the rooftops of the Parc des Expositions to explore a one-of-a-kind urban farm.
Opened in spring 2020, this perched farm grows fruits, vegetables and herbs on nearly 14,000 m2 of roof space, with the aim of reconnecting city dwellers with their food, right in the heart of the capital. A great outing idea for those who love unusual places, responsible experiences, and discoveries that make you see the city in a new light.
The site positions itself as the largest rooftop aeroponic and hydroponic urban farm in Europe. Here, soilless cultivation makes it possible to repurpose unused urban spaces while dramatically expanding production. In the long term, the equivalent of more than 80,000 m2 of production space will be brought into cultivation thanks to aeroponic columns and hydroponic gutters.
Heirloom tomatoes, fraises, lettuces, radishes, chard, cucumbers, eggplants, aromatic herbs or even edible flowers grow here in step with the seasons, pesticide-free, before being distributed through short supply chains. Even better: the place is open to visitors, and its story is told and put into practice!
From April to September, individuals and families can participate in a visit to the urban farm, offered in French or English. The program includes: an introduction to Nature Urbaine, a quick overview of the history of urban farming, a look at the techniques used, including aeroponics and hydroponics, and then, as an option, a harvest of fresh produce depending on seasonal availability. The tour lasts about 1 hour, with harvesting time added on. As for pricing, expect €15 per adult and €8 per child, excluding the harvest cost paid on site.
The activities and workshops are also part of the venue’s DNA. For events and groups, Nature Urbaine offers a panel of experiences around plants, well-being, environmental awareness, and creativity. You’ll find notably kokedama and terrarium workshops, a plant bar, and herbal-tea making, but also yoga, rigology, the Climate Fresk, the Biodiversity Fresk, and other upcycling activities. A concrete way to blend relaxation, knowledge sharing and ecological consciousness, without turning the outing into a lecture!
Another piece of good news for urban gardeners: 156 garden plots are up for rent to city dwellers who want to grow their own vegetables, with advice from professional market gardeners! Between educational visits, rooftop picking, plant workshops and sustainable events, Nature Urbaine - NU Paris stands out as a pleasant green interlude to discover near the Porte de Versailles.
