Jeannine is the little neighborhood nugget on rue des Pyrénées, in Paris's 20th arrondissement. Opened by childhood friends Jérémy and Florian, Jeannine's menu features traditional, quality-sourced produce, carefully prepared in a homemade kitchen!
The raw materials are sourced from local producers in the Paris region as well as Cantal, where Jérémy has also opened a guinguette in his grandfather's old workshop, all of which are reflected in the menu.
Deeply attached to its roots and sincere in its approach, the place also pays tribute to the founders' two grandmothers, both named Jeannine! And what really sets the cantine apart, in addition to its warm and welcoming atmosphere, are its super-affordable prices, with cocktails around 7 euros and dishes between 4 and 15 euros, often to share!
A pleasant surprise, given the exceptional quality of the produce, with a menu that changes every season, devised by an emerging chef, Noé Valero, available evenings and Saturdays.
Here, you can sit inside, with its simple, rough furniture, or out on the large terrace, located on an airy little square that's perfectly pleasant in fine weather, from breakfast to dinner, which often merges with the aperitif. Having come for this occasion, we finally left at around 10pm, having tasted plenty of small dishes that we share with each other, a truly appreciable conviviality that makes you want to stay.
On this evening-only menu, we chose an egg mimosa androasted eggplant, amid savory offerings like shrimp ravioli, brocciu, fried chicken and a vegetarian burger.
As for the small plates, which are available all day long, we decided to splurge, given the very low prices, as you only need to pay 5 euros for the butter-radish terrine, 8 euros for the charcuterie, as for the cheeses, and 6 euros for the lemon hummus!
If you prefer a main course, kale salad with roasted goat's cheese or pork shank are on the menu, but we've honored local products, with cheeses (special mention for the piece of cantal, of course) and butter from the Duroux cheese factory, semi-salted and glazed with chives, much more flavorful and herbaceous than a usual butter, to be enjoyed with good sourdough bread made just a few blocks away.
Among Maison Laborie's charcuterie, our favorite is the rillette, lightly peppered and perfectly tasty! As for the eggplants, they're melt-in-your-mouth gourmet, their taste almost forgotten in favor of the surprising combo of miso and Parmesan cream!
The onion-basil mayonnaise in the egg-mimosa adds a spicy, modern twist to the traditional recipe. A bit like everything else at Jeannine's, after all!
Particularly when it comes to cocktails, which really surprised us, already with their very low prices for the capital, even for signatures, between 7 and 9 euros! They're even cheaper than the classics, and at that price, we'd recommend them more than highly! The Vert-Forêt, with its fir thorn liqueur, basil and honey, is a great discovery for those looking for a fresh, herbaceous cocktail, similar to the mojito.
As for the Marron-Froid , it's a real dessert drink, a sweet and frothy blend of birlou, an Auvergne-based apple and chestnut spirit, and cinnamon, to die for. Clearly one of the best sweet cocktails we've had in the capital, for lovers of chestnut cream and other delicacies, so much so that we could have had several!
If you're not too keen on cocktails, the half beer is 4.5 euros, brewed a few kilometers away, while the signature mocktails are 7 euros and offer an eclectic range of flavors. All the drinks have one thing in common: the ZEBI label, which means no industrial beverages. Try the lemonades, iced tea, artisanal apple juice or the creations such as"Honneur à Jeannine", with its crème brulée and verbena aromas.
To round off the evening, we've opted for lemon crunch for dessert, in the middle of a chocolate mousse, a heart of flan ville or churros. With its crunchy filo pastry, fresh strawberries, creamy chantilly and lemon cream, it's light, with a hint of delicate acidity.
Good to know for comedy fans: several times a month, a comedy club, Boulette, sets up shop at Jeannine's for an hour of non-stop stand-up, giving you the chance to have a good time for both your stomach and your zygomatic!
