Some spots become an integral part of a city’s soul. The Café de la Paix, situated in Place de l’Opéra in Paris’s 9th arrondissement, is definitely one of them. Since 1862, this historic landmark listed as a monument historique has been welcoming Parisians and visitors from around the world beneath its painted ceilings with cloud motifs and its renowned gilded woodwork. Often thought to be a place reserved for special occasions, it actually boasts a versatile charm that makes it appealing any time of day.
The decor, redesigned by interior architect Pierre-Yves Rochon in 2021, features two distinct atmospheres. On the boulevard des Capucines side, the spacious dining room with its fluted columns, Louis XVI-style armchairs upholstered in cream leather, and velvet banquettes creates a luxurious Second Empire ambiance perfect for lingering over a meal. Opposite, the Opéra square side transforms into a relaxed , with whitewashed oak furniture and botanical motifs, making it an ideal spot for a quick drink or pastry while gazing at the Palais Garnier Opera House. Esteemed figures like Victor Hugo, Guy de Maupassant, Ernest Hemingway, and Maria Callas have all wandered these storied walls, and it’s easy to see why the moment you step inside.
Over at the all-day dining brewery:
On the plate, Chef Laurent André, a Jura native trained under Alain Chapel and Alain Ducasse, offers a classic French bistro cuisine rooted in seasonal ingredients and regional flavors. The renowned French onion soup at Café de la Paix, prepared according to the original 1862 recipe, remains a perennial favorite.
The menu also features Market Return and Discovery options, served as five-course sets. These include duck foie gras with a confit, lobster quenelles, veal chop cooked in a cocotte, or Marinated scallops. For dessert, the house favorites are unanimous: the caramelized millefeuille made to order and the opera cake, both rich and bursting with flavor. On the à la carte side, guests often indulge in the organic linguine with Canadian lobster or the slow-cooked leg of lamb accompanied by coconut beans.
Of course, the house specialty remains the seafood, a true signature of the place.
To make its offerings more accessible on a daily basis, the Café de la Paix has introduced a handy weekly menu available Monday through Friday at lunchtime. It features two options: starter + main or main + dessert in 45 minutes for €39, or the full set menu starter + main + dessert for €49. The dishes change daily, boasting comforting classics such as the grandmother’s veal blanquette on Thursdays, Paris-Toulouse sausage with mashed potatoes on Wednesdays, and pan-seared scallops with glazed endives on Fridays... A great way to experience the essence of the place without breaking the bank.
On Sundays, enjoy the ultimate brunch crafted by Laurent André, served from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM. Indulge in a generous buffet with a glass of champagne included, plus a fun, interactive activity for the little ones. The price is €120 per person, with free entry for children under 3 and half-price for kids aged 4 to 12.
