The musée des égouts de Paris was expected to reopen last year, but it eventually did this October 23, 2021. Not very glamorous, the sewers museum is yet very interesting! Let us meet soon to discover all the novelties available in this underground exhibition area.
Closed in July 2018 for works, the sewers museum has been renovated in depth. The museum is now able to welcome all publics. Handicapped persons are now able to come to the museum, as they could not so far.
Renovations have delivered a better tour experience, although not pleasant smells, mosquitoes and a few rats are still around. The place is brighter and more welcoming. The tour has been somewhat altered, like the structure in some places, and especially where the way was very narrow and not very comfortable. In addition to these renovations, the institution has thought the staging over and offers a rich museum-layout including modernized supports.
As a matter of fact, all the former boards worn out over time have been thrown away to welcome new ones. Like a timeline for instance or interactive boards. Explanatory signs are now scattered all along the tour that can be completed on your own or guided by one of the museum agents and some of them are even trained sewage workers.
Another novelty for the reopening of Paris sewaves, several video clips. Several clips are placed all along the tour. The last one, made of CGI and very instructive summarizes everything you have learned throughout the tour, with pictures and therefore, very easy to understand as everything is explained one last time with diagrams and maps, always showing where you are.
This instructive will can also be enjoyed in the very restroom. As a matter of fact, the bathroom for the public tour of Paris sewages are now fitted with interactive boards explaining the upcoming journey of the content of the flush.
All models and objects displayed have been renovated and are now like brand-new. The sewage museum being more modern, it has also set up sound showers. Placed on a very specific spot, you can start an explanatory soundtrack.
Audioguides are to be available soon and workshops soon open to children.
The City of Paris has also set up Wi-Fi, which is very handy since there is no telephone network down the sewage.
The tour is rather uncommon but definitely worth it if you are curious and a history fan! Brace yourself, because you are going down as soon as the museum reopens. And who knows, you might run into one of Paris's famous rats!
