In Paris, Ile-de-France and the rest of France, a general strike is taking place this Thursday, September 18, 2025. The aim of this large-scale mobilization is to protest against the government's 2026 budget austerity plan, which includes spending cuts and the abolition of two public holidays.
This social movement is also demanding higher wages and pensions, and the maintenance and reinforcement of public services, and is strongly supported by trade unions and many professional sectors that have mobilized. Numerous assembly points have been identified in Paris and the rest of theIle-de-France region, and an inter-union demonstration will start from Bastille at 2pm.
In response to the strike, several national museums and monuments decided to close their doors on Thursday, September 18. Such is the case of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint-Denis, located north of Paris in the 93 department, which has exceptionally closed due to the strike.
The official website of Saint-Denis Cathedral Basilica states: "Due to a social movement, the monument is closed today." Stay tuned to find out when the monument will reopen its doors, and whether such a closure will be renewed for the next few days of demonstrations.
