A massive interprofessional mobilization is taking place in Paris and the Ile-de-France region this Thursday, September 18, 2025. Eight trade unions are organizing demonstrations and rallies, while the "Bloquons tout" movement is preparing road blockades, promising a day of major disruption in the capital and Ile-de-France region.

The strike on September 18, 2025 is shaping up to be one of the biggest social mobilizations of the year, in the Paris region as elsewhere in France. Theintersyndicale, comprising the CFDT, CGT, Force Ouvrière, CFE-CGC, CFTC,Unsa, FSU and Solidaires, is coordinating almost 200 rallies across France to protest against the 43.8 billion euros in savings planned in the government budget. In the Paris region, this day combines official union demonstrations and blockades by the "Bloquons tout" movement, creating a cocktail of disruptions unprecedented since the September 10 mobilization, which brought together 200,000 demonstrators across France.

Authorities are expecting between 30,000 and 60,000 people to turn out in the capital, potentially double the number mobilized on September 10. This escalation in social protest comes at a time when the"Bloquons tout" movement is continuing its blockade actions targeting road infrastructures in the Paris region, with the Paris ring road and the main freeways providing access to the capital in their sights.

Where to demonstrate in Paris and the Ile-de-France region?

The main demonstration in Paris kicks off this Thursday at 2pm from the Place de la Bastille, with a rally scheduled to start at 12:30pm. The procession will follow the traditional route of major Parisian mobilizations: Bastille → République → Nation. This unitary demonstration brings together the eight main trade union organizations for the first time since June 6, 2023, the date of the last mobilization against pension reform.

At the same time, numerous decentralized rallies were organized in various arrondissements of Paris and in the suburbs. In Seine-Saint-Denis, a procession set off from Les Lilas at 7pm, in front of the Carrefour supermarket at Porte des Lilas. The aim of this local demonstration is to mobilize the inhabitants of the eastern suburbs, and bring together as many participants as possible for the big inter-professional day.

The cultural unions are also organizing their own mobilization, with an inter-union meeting scheduled to coordinate their sector's mobilization and defend cultural budgets threatened by austerity. In the 19th arrondissement, a rally and procession is planned in front of the Carrefour supermarket.

What roadblocks are planned?

The "Bloquons tout" movement is preparing a new series of road blockades to coincide with the inter-professional strike. After targeting the gates of the Paris ring road on September 10, activists intend to step up their actions this Thursday. During the previous mobilization, roadblocks were set up as early as 7 a.m. at the gates of Montreuil, Clignancourt, la Chapelle, Bagnolet and Italie.

The appeal launched on social networks refers to a plan to "block Paris door by door and wall by wall", targeting the 38 gateways to the capital. Activists are planning to block the ring road during rush hour: "Why don't we block the ring road at 5pm when there are lots of cars?" asked one activist at a preparatory meeting.

The A1, A3 and A6 freeways are also under particular scrutiny, especially where they connect with the ring road. The A6 at Porte d'Italie presents a high risk of massive traffic jams, while the A3 at Bagnolet and its motorway interchange could be targeted "by all possible accesses". The Rungis market in Val-de-Marne is another strategic target for disrupting the region's food supply.

Over 200 mobilizations across France

September 18 was a day of massive mobilization, with almost 200 rallies organized across France. From major metropolises to small towns, the protest is affecting every region: Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Strasbourg, Rennes, Toulouse, Nantes, Bordeaux and Bayonne.

To help you find your way around the mobilization map, each organization has its own color: in orange, rallies organized by the CFDT, in red those of the CGT, in purple the actions of the Solidaires union, and in green the blockades called for by the "Bloquons tout" movement. How do protesters organize themselves?

The decentralized actions of the "Bloquons tout" movement rely on organization via social networks to coordinate spontaneous blockades and targeted disruptions. At a meeting of activists, various strategies were discussed: "activating alarms in the metro, blocking the ring road at rush hour or mobilizing in bars across the capital".

These activists prefer escargot operations to disrupt traffic without exposing themselves directly to arrests. On September 10, cyclists organized a "mission escargot à vélo", cycling at two an hour along the boulevards des maréchaux, even managing to block the motorized police brigade for fifteen minutes.

In parallel with the road blockades, the movement is organizing solidarity canteens to feed protesters free of charge and create spaces for conviviality. The aim of these actions is to broaden the mobilization beyond union members, and to create links of solidarity in the working-class neighborhoods of the Paris region.

Which sectors are taking part?

The September 18 mobilization affects many sectors in the Paris region. In thenational education system, the FSU-SNUipp union for primary schools and the SNES-FSU union for secondary schools are organizing general assemblies in schools, transforming schools into forums for debate and citizen mobilization.

Pharmacies are closing en masse, with rallies organized in front of prefectures. The pharmacists' union(USPO, FSPF, UNPF, Federgy and UDGPO) is protesting against the reduction in trade discounts on generic medicines, with 98% of pharmacies surveyed planning to close. In Ile-de-France hospitals, all professions are concerned by the strike notices, with doctors, nurses and administrative staff protesting against the doubling of medical deductibles. The hospital unions(CGT Santé, FO Santé, CFDT Santé-Sociaux and SUD Santé) are coordinating this sector-wide mobilization.

Electricians and gas workers are also mobilizing in response to a call from the CGT Mines-Energie, with rallies planned in front of energy sites in the Paris region. The aim of this mobilization is to disrupt energy supplies in order to put pressure on the government, while at the same time raising awareness of the challenges of the ecological transition.

How will the authorities respond?

Faced with the threat of road blockades and numerous rallies, the authorities are preparing a reinforced security system. Emblematic places of power such as the Élysée, Matignon, the National Assembly and the Senate are benefiting from reinforced protection. Intelligence services anticipate the presence of between 150 and 300 radical Black Bloc-type elements in the Paris processions.

The Prefect of Police has warned that "the forces of law and order will systematically intervene" in the event of blockages or damage. This strategy aims to avoid paralyzing traffic in the Paris region, while preserving the constitutionally-guaranteed right to demonstrate.

How do you get around on this day?

In view of the disruptions forecast for transport and roads, we recommend that Parisians plan their journeys as far ahead as possible. Telecommuting is the best option whenever possible. For those who must travel, alternatives include cycling, shared transport or carpooling.

Users can consult real-time information on the official websites of RATP and SNCF Connect for transport conditions, and Sytadin for road traffic. At RATP, the four majority unions(CGT RATP, FO RATP, Unsa Mobilité and CFE-CGC RATP) have filed a joint notice calling for "a black day" of mobilization. On the SNCF side, three major unions(CGT-Cheminots, Unsa-Ferroviaire and CFDT-Cheminots) are participating massively in the movement, promising major disruptions to transport services in the Paris region.
