This Thursday, September 18, a massive strike is affecting pharmacies in Paris and the Île-de-France region. TheUnion des syndicats de pharmaciens d'officine (USPO) estimates that "80 to 90%" of pharmacies will be closed in the Ile-de-France region. This unprecedented mobilization is part of a nationwide protest movement against a ministerial order issued on August 4 to reduce pharmacy margins on generic drugs.
The government's plan is to cap laboratory rebates at a maximum of 30% of the generic price, compared with the current 40%. For pharmacists, this decision threatens the economic viability of many pharmacies, particularly in rural and suburban areas. "The risk for many pharmacies is closure. We're talking about one pharmacy in three in France", warn the professional associations.
This pharmacy strike is part of a wider inter-professional mobilization, with eight trade union confederations calling for an inter-professional mobilization against the Bayrou budget. Beyond September 18, the pharmacists intend to close "every Saturday from September 27", thus extending their protest movement.
Faced with this massive closure, there are several ways to locate a pharmacy on call or a dispensary that has remained open. The first reflex is to consult the official website monpharmacien-idf.fr, developed in collaboration with theAgence Régionale de Santé Île-de-France and the Union Régionale des Professionnels de Santé. This platform, which is also available as a mobile application, can be used to geolocate open pharmacies in real time.
To find your nearest on-call pharmacy, you can also call 3237 (€0.35/minute) or visit 3237.fr directly. This national service, managed by the pharmaceutical unions, provides contact details for pharmacies on duty during the day, night and on public holidays. An alert has been set up, however, so be sure to call the listed pharmacies before you go out to make sure they are open.
In inner Paris, duty pharmacies are open and you can go directly to them. In the other departments of Ile-de-France (Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, Essonne and Val d'Oise), the local police or gendarmerie will provide you with details of the pharmacy on duty at night. From 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., you should therefore go directly to the police station with identification and the day's prescription. You can also call 17 (a free number available 24 hours a day) to find out where your nearest duty pharmacy is. The police station or gendarmerie can then inform the pharmacist who will be waiting for you.
Health authorities are reminding us of the importance of anticipating your medication needs, particularly for chronic treatments. We ask you to anticipate the renewal of your treatments to avoid any disappointment during this period of prolonged mobilization.
In the event of an absolute emergency, hospital emergency services are available 24 hours a day. For medical referrals, call 15 (SAMU) for advice and redirection to the appropriate services. In an emergency, the 15 will direct you to an emergency service or organize the intervention of an appropriate team.
On-call pharmacists requisitioned by the prefectures continue to provide a minimum service to respond to pharmaceutical emergencies. In the event of a requisition, you must inform your departmental union without delay, so that it can fill in the Résogardes tool and guarantee access to urgent medicines.
This historic strike illustrates the economic tensions affecting the French pharmaceutical sector. At a time when the government is seeking to reduce healthcare spending, pharmacists are warning of the risk of pharmaceutical desertification in certain regions, questioning the balance between budget savings and maintaining a local network of pharmacies throughout the Ile-de-France region.
