Closed for several years due to renovation work, the Maison du Docteur Gachet, an emblematic cultural site inAuvers-sur-Oise, is reopening its doors to the general public until November 2, 2025. This is an opportunity to discover the house that once belonged to Doctor Gachet, a doctor, amateur painter and, above all, art collector.
Famous for having seen the painter Van Gogh pass through its doors, the village of Auvers-sur-Oise, located in the Val-d'Oise département, also boasts another personality who left a lasting mark on its territory: Doctor Gachet. In 1890, at the request of painter Pissarro, Doctor Paul Ferdinand Gachet welcomed Vincent Van Gogh on his arrival in Auvers-sur-Oise. The painter immortalized the doctor on three occasions.
Since 1991, the house and garden have been listed on the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments. During your visit, you can discover Docteur Gachet's collection of paintings and engravings.
Tucked away inthe hills above Auvers-sur-Oise, the Maison du docteur Gachet invites us to immerse ourselves in the world of Impressionism and late 19th-century artistic life . Acquired in 1872 by Dr Paul Gachet, an art-loving doctor, the house quickly became a meeting place for artists such as Cézanne, Pissarro, Guillaumin and Van Gogh.
The house, restored and opened to the public in 2003, now offers a scenography faithful to Van Gogh 's time. The first floorrecreates the atmosphere of the salon as the painter knew it in 1890, while the second floor features original works by Dr. Gachet, under the pseudonym Paul van Ryssel, and his son Louis van Ryssel.
The temporary exhibition Empreintes Gravées, on view until November 2 , 2025, highlights Dr. Gachet 's passion for engraving. It features a selection of prints from the Samuel Josefowitz collection and graphic works by Bernard Cohen, as well as two still lifes by his son.
You can also explore the terraced garden , immortalized by Van Gogh, and the courtyard where he shared meals with his brother Theo. The house contains personal objects , letters and engravings , testifying to the close links between art, medicine and culture.
Admission to this unique site in Auvers-sur-Oise is €3 full price and €2 concessions. Admission is free for children under 11. The museum closes for the winter season, from early November to late March.
