Why is pizza so pricey in Paris? Fans of Italian flavors have to pay top dollar to savor this transalpine favorite in the capital. And the latest surge of Italian restaurant openings has only fueled the pizza hype, sending prices skyward in the process.
But all that could well change with Big Mamma's fifth outlet Pizzeria Popolare. Already behind East Mamma in Bastille, Ober Mamma in Oberkampf, Mamma Primi in Batignolles, and most recently BigLove Caffè in the Marais, the bistronomic group is once again making headlines with the opening of this pizzeria that opened its doors on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at 111 Rue Réaumur, in the Sentier.
A new variant of the group’s brands led by the duo Victor Lugger and Tigrane Seydoux? Not really, because with the opening of the Popolare pizzeria, the new masters of Italian cuisine in Paris intend to restore pizza’s populist character, i.e. make it affordable for everyone. Here, prices start at 4 euros for the basic tomato base and top out at 16 euros for the hearty black-truffle cream with fresh truffle. In between, you can opt for a margherita at 5 euros, a four-cheese at 9 euros, or mussels with squid ink at 11 euros. In the end, the price range sits well below what is normally charged in Paris and below the rates of the group’s other concepts.
What do we get for that enticing price?
It would seem the recipe hasn’t changed. The pizzas are still wood-fired in ovens brought from Naples, and the same commitment to top-tier ingredients that made Big Mamma famous is back in force with items imported directly from Italy, such as a creamy burrata meant for sharing among five or six. Of course there are non-pizza options—think beer-marinated chicken skewers or a lobster-bisque risotto—but at that price, you’d hate to miss the main draw.
You can add a little sparkle to your meal by pairing it with a glass of Prosecco for €6.50, a cocktail from €6, or a glass of Nora d’Avola red wine (a reliable choice) for €4.50.
Like the other spots in the Big Mamma universe, Pizzeria Popolare proves the feast for the eyes isn’t limited to the plate. Once again, the group goes all out on the décor, infusing the space with a chic tavern vibe and a façade dusted with bottles. It signals that here you don’t just eat well—you can also sample no fewer than 500 alcoholic references from around the world. A bold stylistic choice that lands, to be admired without moderation!
What’s more, for partygoers, the venue hosts live concerts from Thursday to Saturday evenings, ending in a late-night club scene until 2 a.m.
