We're already familiar with waffle bars, which are quite common in Paris. When it set up shop in the capital, Waff Cachée decided to let us enjoy this guilty pleasure in its own unique way. In the heart of Paris's 2nd arrondissement, near Etienne Marcel, this restaurant with its bright purple façade specializes in filled waffles (and more). It's ideal for a quick bite while strolling around Paris, or for an unusual picnic on a sunny day.
Behind this spot are Jan and Mariam, a foodie duo who wanted above all to create a place that reflected their personalities, with recipes that echo both their origins, between the United States and Lebanon, and their favorite country,Italy, where they regularly stay. Together, and with the help of their loved ones, they worked tirelessly to create well-balanced waffles that are not too dry, slightly crispy yet sufficiently soft, and above all, able to hold the generous toppings they contain.
We rose to the challenge with flying colors, but we should warn those with small appetites that Waff Cachée's creations are quite generous. Fortunately, the clever packaging allows you to take them home if your eyes are bigger than your stomach. Before you visit, keep in mind that everything here is homemade and the waffles are prepared to order, so it takes a little time (but your patience will be well rewarded).
Whether you prefer savory or sweet, there's something for everyone here. Both categories feature creative recipes that are sure to tempt food lovers. The savory waffles are all about comfort food, with recipes inspired byItaly, including the best-selling Pepperoni Melt (pepperoni, tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil), which can also be adapted for vegetarians. For those who love seafood flavors, there's the Salmon Desire, made with butter-browned salmon and garlic lemon sauce, a simple but effective combination. For our part, and on Mariam's advice, we'll answer the call of the Meat Call, made with ground beef, a delicious Italian tomato sauce, and a duo of parmesan and mozzarella, both very present, for a truly comforting result.
Those with a sweet tooth will be treated to nostalgic waffles, with something for every taste and mood! The Peanut Choco Lover promises a decadent taste experience with peanut butter, chocolate, banana, and slivered almonds. The S'mores Kiss is reminiscent of a cozy moment by the fire with its melted marshmallows mixed with chocolate. The Cinnamon Feverpromises to take you right back to your childhood with its cinnamon, apples, and creamy filling. The last example is the Ube, which showcases this trendy ingredient straight from Japan, particularly loved by Mariam. This is the one we tested in the sweet category. Not only is this waffle with its creamy filling and marshmallow topping pretty to look at, it also has just the right amount of sweetness, and the Ube flavor is present enough to give it that characteristic subtle vanilla taste.
These delicacies are paired with signature fresh drinks that reimagine the gourmet beverages that are increasingly popular in the capital, such as the cold foam ube fusion or the spirulina-based iced drink. The most unmissable of these is probably the Golden Hour Matcha, a creamy, milky cocktail featuring fifty shades of superfoods, including, of course, Japanese green gold. It impresses with its rainbow of colors, yet Mariam assures us that there are no artificial colors. While this colorful drink might make us fear that we're dealing with a sugar bomb, in reality, we'll be surprised by this creation, which is lighter and more balanced than we expected, without compromising on its gourmet spirit.
It's not just the waffles that are generously topped here: as the duo likes to say, this is a place that hides its game well! Waff Cachée also offers brioches filled with artisanal ice cream in a range of flavors that are popular with Parisians, including Lebanese Achta, chocolate, pistachio, strawberry, and the very trendy duo: Matcha and Ube.
It's worth noting that the place also has a few seats if you want to eat in, so that's an option! However, when we visited, the tables were at seat level, which isn't the most practical for a sit-down meal. So you have to adapt! A special student price is available on the menu upon presentation of a student card, with a savory waffle and salad for €12. We also appreciate the overall value for money: a savory waffle costs between €10.50 and €14, and a sweet waffle between €7 and €8.50, bearing in mind that Waff Cachée doesn't skimp on the toppings.
