In the 5th arrondissement of Paris, the Panthéon is a monument not to be missed. This church, recognizable by its dome and its motto "Aux grands hommes, la Patrie reconnaissante" ("To great men, the grateful Fatherland") , is renowned for its crypt, in which many historical figures are laid to rest, including Victor Hugo, Voltaire, Emile Zola, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Alexandre Dumas.
The monument is not only dedicated to great men, but also to illustrious women such as Marie Curie (buried with her husband Pierre Curie), Simone Veil and Joséphine Baker. Perched atop Mont Geneviève, the Pantheon was once the highest mountain in Paris before it was dethroned by... the Eiffel Tower. At the heart of the Pantheon is Foucault's Pendulum, used to observe and demonstrate the Earth's rotational movement.
While this emblematic monument attracts many tourists throughout the year, it can close exceptionally in the event of force majeure. This Wednesday, September 10, 2025, is being marked by rallies and demonstrations as part of the "Bloquons Tout" movement, and the Panthéon is exceptionally closing its doors for the whole day. If you wish to visit this historic landmark, you'll have to reschedule your visit for another day.
