At the edge of the Paris suburbs, near Porte de Champerret, Schnock restaurant has set up shop with the ambition of giving a bistronomic boost to this somewhat off-center corner of the capital.
Behind the address are owner Florence Pietrera, who has worked at several Costes Group establishments, and chef Emmanuel Perrot, who trained with Pierre Gagnaire and Alain Passard and previously worked at Des Terres in the 20th arrondissement.
The two of them have come up with an affordable cuisine at Schnock that offers unbeatable value for money in the Ternes district. At lunchtime, the slate menu costs €25 starter/main course or main course/dessert, and €30 starter/main course/dessert. It's hard to beat the price.
This is all the more true given that the menu changes daily according to what's available and what the chef fancies, and above all offers specialities that don't pale in comparison with the choices on the à la carte menu. As for the à la carte menu, it changes every two months or so, to keep up with the seasons and the finest produce from trusted producers.
At lunchtime, for example, you could choose from the all-veal terrine, sage and oyster mushrooms, pickled fennel (€14), an original variation on the classic country terrine, with sweetbreads; the smoked herring and fromage blanc with zaatar, fennel and pumpkin seeds; or the beef tartare with parsleyed apples, very good if a little lacking in liveliness.
Emmanuel Perrot, himself a sweet-tooth, is in charge of the desserts, with seasonal creations that hit the spot, such as the sun-drenched roasted apricots with thyme and lime meringue, or the regressive passion fruit cream with chocolate crumble.
Simple , no-fuss French cuisine that's both affordable and seasonal, in keeping with the times. The same care is taken with the wine list, which gives pride of place to French bottles, whether from great estates or more confidential vineyards.
You can enjoy these fine bowling pins at the Table d'Hôte du Comptoir, a large table where, from 6pm, bon vivants come to enjoy a wine tasting around small plates to share.
For a drink or dinner, for a night or a lifetime, Schnock gently awakens this little lost corner of the capital's 17th arrondissement.
