Coronavirus: update on the situation in the world, 711 deaths in Italy and 134 in the U.S., 1,039 in Brazil and +5,772 cases in Peru in 24h

The entire world has been facing the unprecedented coronavirus health crisis for weeks. Discover updates on countries the most impacted by the coronavirus epidemic this Wednesday May 27, 2020. About 5.6 million cases have been reported and over 350,000 people have died of Covid-19 worldwide. Latin America is the new epicementer of the pandemic. Europe is slowly exiting containment.

In the world, as of Wednesday May 27, 2020Covid-19 infected 5,593,148 people. So far, 350,458 people have died worldwide. As many European countries have started exiting containment, the Europen Center for Disease Prevention and Control warns Europe should brace itself for a second Coronavirus wave.

  • The United-States toll is close to 100,000 deaths. As of Wednesday May 27, 1,691,418 cases have been reported. According to the Johns Hopkins Institute, the country reports 711 deaths in 24h (532 yesterday), taking it up to a total close to 98,218 deaths. Despite these high rates, the 50 American States have started partial and gradual containment exit, keeping some restrictions about gatherings in order to curb the virus propagation. The American president banned this Sunday travelers from Brazil to enter the United-States, as Brazil has become the second country the most impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, the White House has announced. Los Angeles tries to fight against parties at home.

  • Brazil becomes the 2nd country the most impacted in terms of infections and the death toll is alarming. It becomes the new epicenter of the pandemic, according to WHO. It reports this Wednesday May 27, a heavy daily toll, 1,039 deaths in 24 hours. The country counts 391,222 cases and 24,512 deaths. Yet, data could be widely underestimated. Overwhelmed, authorities struggle testing the living and the dead. Some deaths due to covid-19 are reported with a twenty-day delay. According to estimations shared by the press, the number of people really infected could be twelve to fifteen times heavier than reported by authorities. Despite this worrying situation, Bolsonaro keeps on calling the population to go back to work to relaunch the economy. The country expects a record-breaking recession in 2020.

  • In Germany, the toll is decreasing. As of Wednesday May 27, 179,364 cases have been reported along with 8,349 deaths (+47). Most hotels and tourism sites reopen this Monday, but almost all bars remain shut. Germany wishes to keep 1.5-meter distance between people until July 5 to avoid any resumption of the pandemic. To try and contain the Covid-19 epidemic, Germany extends social distancing measures to June 29th.

  • The situation is deteriorating in Peru with 5,772 cases in 24 hours. The country now reports 129,751 contamination cases and 3,788 deaths (+159). The country is the 2nd contry the most impacted in Latin America, after Brazil. The situation is described as catastrophic by hospitals.

  • China reports 1 new case from abroad, but no death has been reported. As of today, the country reports a total of 82,992 cases confirmed and 4,635 deaths. "We have mainly strategically succeeded in our response to Covid-19" Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang said this Friday as the National People's Assembly plenary session opened. The city of Wuhan bans eating wild animals. Beijing and Washington are on the edge of a new cold war, China said because of the accusations made by the United-States about its managing of the health crisis.
  • In Italy, the toll decreases. As of Tuesday May 26, have been reported 78 new deaths in 24 hours, (92 the day before) taking the number of deaths to 32,955 since the beginning of the epidemic. As of today, 230,555 cases have been confirmed so far.  Italy will reopen its borders on June 3rd and cancel mandatory quarantine to EU foreigners. "On May 25th, we've planned to reopen gyms, swimming pools, sport centers, respecting health protocols" Italian Prime Minister says. "Starting from June 15, theaters and movie theaters will reopen and our children will enjoy several entertainment offers". Italy might count 19,000 more deaths than the official numbers, the Transalpin Social Security says.
  • In the United Kingdom the government reports 265,227 cases and 37,048 deaths. As of Tuesday May 26, 134 deaths in 24h (77 yesterday). A two-week quarantine is imposed to travelers coming from France. France has announced a measure of reciprocity if it was to happen. The country confirmed its gradual containment exit plan with the partial reopening of schools from June 1. Boris Johnson wants to reopen non-essential stores from June 15. The overall assessment in the UK is revised upwards. According to the National Records of Scotland, the ONS, the NHS England and the Northern Ireland Statistics, the overall toll would be 47,300 deaths.
  • In Spain, the toll is revised this Tuesday May 26. The Health minister has corrected the number of deaths to 27,117 about 283 more deaths than yesterday because of late reports. The country now includes over 236,259 cases reported. Spain has decided to reopen its borders to tourists in early July. Madrid and Barcelona are starting to exit containment: bar terraces and restaurants reopen, meeting of 10 people allowed. Over half the population is already in phase 2. Starting this Monday, sunbathing or walking by the sea is allowed in these areas. Yet, each city council sets the rules.
  • Belgium is one of the countries running the most tests in the world. As of Tuesday May 26, the country reports 198 new contamination cases, taking it to a total of 57,455 cases. The Health Authorities have reported 9,673 deaths (+23 in 24 hours). This past Monday, Belgium has launched the second phase of containment exit: schools are gradually reopening, hair salons and other contact salons resume with strict health conditions, museums and zoos are also reopening. Markets with maximum 50 stands can resume, ceremonies with maxiumum 30 people are allowed and gyms can reopen but with 20 people maximum inside.

  • Iran reports 57 deaths in 24 hours taking it up to a total of 7,500 deaths. The country currently reports 139,511 cases declared. Shiite sanctuaries reopened with health measures, restaurants as well. Universities will reopen on June 6th.
  • In Chile, the epidemic is increasing and 4,000 new contaminations have been reported in 24 hours, including 2 ministers from the government. The country includes 77,961 cases and 806 deaths, including 45 these past 24 hours.

  • Sweden exceeds 4,000 deaths. As of Wednesday May 27, 34,440 cases and 4,125 deaths have been reported. It's one of the rare countries to have not gone into confinement. The country includes more deaths than its Nordic neighbors. A study carried out by the Swedish Health Agency estimates that a bit over 20% of Stockholm inhabitant developed antibodies against coronavirus.

  • In France, according to the latest report from the health authorities as for the COVID-19 pandemic 145,555 cases confirmed and 28,530 people have died. 83 deaths in 24 hours have been reported (18,195 in hospitals and 10,335 in nursing homes). This week are expected the first announcements as for the Phase 2 of the containment exit scheme expected to start on June 2.

  • In Russia, the number of deaths has never been this high. Authorities now report 362,342 cases and 3,807 deaths including 174 these past 24 hours. The death rate remains yet lower than in Italy, Spain, France, Great-Britain and the United-States. Russia encourages citizens to travel abroad this summer.

  • In Portugal, containment exit continues slowly. As of Wednesday May 27, 31,007 cases and 1,342 deaths (+12) have been reported. Portugal has reopened restaurants, cafés, museums and galleries this May 18. The country is ready to welcome visitors this summer. Even though border with Spain remains closed, talks are ongoing and they are expected to reopen on June 8th.
  • In Japan as of Wednesday May 27, 2020, 16,623 cases have been reported in total, and 846 deaths (+16). The government has lifted health emergency the entire country.
  • In India, the pandemic severely hits Bombay. The government has decided to extend confinement until late May. As of today, India reports 151,876 cases and 4,346 deaths (+174)
  • Morocco extends confinement up to June 10. The country reports 7,577 cases but few tests are performed. The country has also reported 202 deaths (+2 in 24 hours). The health situation is stable but not entirely reassuring, Morocco's Prime Minister Saad-Eddine El Othmani said. 
  • Currently reporting 22,074 contamination cases and 1,024 Covid-19 deaths (+7), Poland has reopened on May 18th hair salons, cafés and restaurants.

  • South Korea is worried about the recurrence of new Covid-19 cases. As of today, the country reports 11,265 cases and 269 deaths (+0 in 24 hours). Seoul has decreed the shut down of bars and nightclubs in the capital, because of a new cluster.  
  • Vietnam keeps on phasing out. The country includes less than 300 cases of people affected by Covid-19 and no death. Gatherings remain banned and masks and distancing highly encouraged, but some stores have already reopened starting Thursday April 23.
  • Romania announced the first deconfinement measures, mandatory facemasks starting from May 15 in closed spaces and public transit. As of today, the country reports 18,429 cases and 1,216 deaths (+110) because of Covid-19.

  • In Switzerland, the country is phasing out. First hair-dressers, doctors, daycares and garden centers, followed on May 11th by schools and other stores. Then professionsal and secondary schools, universities, zoos and libraries from June 8th. As of Wednesday May 27, 1,915 deaths (+2) and 30,761 cases have been reported as well.

  • In Austria partial deconfinement has started. Cafés and restaurant are reopening. The ban of big public gatherings will be sustained until July at least. Schools are closed until mid-May. Facemasks are mandatory. The country currently reports 16,557 cases and 643 deaths (+2). Germany and Austria will reopen their borders on June 15th.

  • In Algeria, the African country reporting the largest death toll, confinement is extended up to May 29, that is to say after the end of Ramadan. As of Wednesday May 27, 8,697 cases and 617 deaths (+8) related to the epidemic have been reported.

  • In Ireland, the country will gradually exit containment starting Monday with the reopening of some stores, beaches and people can meet outside in group of 4. The country imposes from Monday a two-week quarantine to people traveling to the country. As of Wednesday May 27, 24,735 cases and 1,615 deaths have been reported.

  • The epidemic is spreading in Africa but remains mild. South Africa reports 24,264 cases and 524 deaths (+43)
