Not far from Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Montparnasse district has been known as the heart of Parisian artistic and intellectual life since the Roaring Twenties. Anecdotally, the district got its name from the local students who named it in the 17th century after Mount Parnassus, the home of the Muses in Greek mythology.
As early as the French Revolution, numerous cabarets and dance halls were set up in the streets of Montparnasse, but the district really took off in the 1920s with the arrival of numerous French and international artists. Among them were Picasso, Soutine, Cézanne, Foujita, Apollinaire, Modigliani, Brancusi, Man Ray and Georges Braque. Still a wasteland, the area offered inexpensive studios!
Although Montparnasse has changed its face, some of these historic addresses are still open today, such as La Closerie des Lilas, La Coupole and Le Dôme. Montparnasse is a great place to live, to learn thanks to the many museums, and to relax in one of the many independent cinemas or in the parks and gardens.
