Between La Cigale and L'Elysée Montmartre, on Boulevard Marguerite-de-Rochechouart in Paris's 18th arrondissement , Chez Marguerite offers popular French cuisine. This new-generation Parisian bouillon, open for lunch and dinner, immerses us in a warm, no-frills atmosphere, where home cooking, seasonal produce and conviviality are the order of the day. Conceived as a welcoming place to live, the restaurant, run by Jérôme Iffenecker (who has worked for Marc Veyrat, Bocuse and Paris Society) and his partner Valérie Bedaux, revives an old bistro with charm and simplicity.
The décor, with its mix of terrazzo, leather banquettes and retro furniture, sets the tone: here, no fuss is made, but particular care is taken with the welcome and the food. Whether for lunch with colleagues or dinner with friends, you'll quickly feel at ease. On the menu, you'll find all the hallmarks of low-priced bouillon: mashed sausage, steak and French fries, duck parmentier, or the boeuf bourguignon coquillettes, reminiscent of dishes from our childhood. A comforting cuisine, made with generosity.
On our visit, we started with a flakysnail cassolette and Charentes melon with cured ham, a fresh and generously served starter.
For the main course, we tried the boeuf bourguignon served with coquillettes: while the meat was perfectly simmered and melted, the pasta seemed a little bland. My sidekick opted for the duck breast, nicely dressed and accompanied by a homemade ratatouille. We like the attention to detail in the preparation, which makes a welcome change from classic broths.
But Chez Marguerite doesn't limit itself to classics: the chef also offers more contemporary suggestions of the day, such as grilled octopus, served with rice and pan-fried vegetables, or tigre qui pleure, a fine piece of marinated beef. Lovers of melted cheese will also delight in the roasted half-camembert or the Perigord salad.
Small pleasures are not forgotten: at aperitif time, buttered radishes, sausage and n°3 Breton oysters are always a hit. As for sweet treats, we opted for the red fruit pavlova, airy and very generous, perfect for ending the meal on a sweet, summery note.
We especially like the unbeatable value for money: starters from 3€, main courses from 11 to 22€, desserts around 6€. A real bargain in Montmartre for French food without breaking the bank. If you're in the area for a show, it's the ideal place to eat before or after.
With its simple but well-cared-for atmosphere, Chez Marguerite is sure to appeal to those looking for a good meal at a reasonable price. It's a must-try if you like French cuisine, comfort food and an unpretentious bistro atmosphere.
